Nik -- We did Laps for Learning. I did 8 laps around the whole field. It was really hard. It was 2 miles. Cowboy Pie is awesome.
Julian -- I stayed after school. And I got a haircut.

Claire -- I left my laptop at home today. It is very much not a good idea to leave your computer at home.
Mark -- I asked for more responsiblity at work, but no additional work.
After this Meggie sat in my lap, took the pencil and the piece of paper, and asked everyone again what their news was. She then "wrote" it down on the bottom.

Meggie -- I went to school (true!). I go to Joanna's house. I go in the basement with Daddy. I need to get my kitchen. I'm bigger, bigger, bigger!
Max -- Mommy took me to school today.
Nik -- I played in the pool with Max.
Julian -- Today in band we got our rankings. I am in Bruin Band.
Claire -- Today was the first day of preschool for Meggie. I got to meet Max's teacher, since I was there when his school day started. I got a picture of him with his poster. Then NannyJo and I took Meggie to her class. She was very excited to play in the kitchen. She got a little worried when I stepped out of the room, but when I came back in I talked to her about how she was going to stay at school by herself. A few minutes later we said goodbye and I left and she did just fine. No tears from anyone. Not even from me!
Mark -- I fixed the fence. Yay!

Meggie -- I took Max to school. I dropped Max off. I practiced. I did not have school today. I went to NannyJo's.
Max -- NOTHING!
Nik -- I tried to burn leaves with a magnifying glass. It made a hole and smoke.
Julian -- In 7th period we turned in our assignments. And then our counselor came in and introduced himself. Then the teacher gave us 4 papers but only 1 was homework.
Claire -- I had breakfast with Patty and only Patty this morning. It was very nice to get to have breakfast with her.
Mark -- The kids pretended they were in a marching band today and went up and down the sidewalk.

Meggie -- I dropped Max off, we went to Harris Teeter, we went to the park, I stayed wtih NannyJo. I practiced going to school but I did NOT go to school today. Just practice. No school today. Not go to school today. It is not time. (she's right, Thursday is her first day)
Max -- I played on the iPad. I wetn to school and played, then I went home for lunch and a nap. The End.
Nik -- I had a great day because I got to swim and then take a bath.

First Day of School
The first day of school for Julian and Nik went well. So well that they came home from school, got into the pool, and stayed there until after 7pm. So we did not have a family dinner. Instead everyone just ate at different times. Meggie didn't swim for long because the bugs were biting her. Max stayed out a little longer but then came in and ate. Mark was eating as I got home from work around 6.30. So we had no Evening News. We should be back on track tonight with family dinner. But the first day went well. Today is Julian's first day with the second half of his schedule (he's got blocks, so on the first day of school he went to his 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th period classes. Today he will do 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th period classes. They do 3rd period every day and lunch happens during that class). So after today he should have a better idea of what his classes are going to be like.

Max: I brought flowers home to Mommy. We made some cookies. They look like all of us. Meggie - there is a cookie that looks like you but it is too hot. We have to wait until it is warm.

Julian: We went to Cracker Barrel and I ate dumplings with a side of dumplings with okra.

Julian: The wire to my braces is thicker. And I have to wear rubber bands when I'm not eating and at night. Theoretically at night when I am sleeping I am also not eating.
Claire: I spent all day in appointments, but my day ended with eating stilton melted on pasta. And I got to read Ready Player One while I was waiting for all the appointments.

Nik: Me and Julian got packed in the dirt. I rode the train at Burke Lake Park. It made my day.
Julian: I wrecked my iPod and rode the carousel. The iPod might get fixed (it was).
Uncle Russ: I shoved a lot of dirt. I stole a cookie from Julian. I played with everyone. I hosed down 2 muddy boys. I drank a sunkist. The End.

Nik: I went on a walk with Uncle Russ
Julian: I went on a very long walk with Uncle Russ. We walked to my school. And then I did a lot of yard work.
Uncle Russ: I helped do a lot of stuff. We fixed the faucet, moved dirt, set up the playset. I played with the kids. I failed to take a nap. I played with the kids more.
Claire: I took a 2 mile walk with Max and Meggie in the double stroller.
Mark: The sink is fixed! And we didn't even have to go to Home Depot!
Uncle Russ PS: I got peed on.
Max: I took a BIG walk. I picked up big rocks in the dirt.

Friday, May the Fourth Be With You
Meggie: I saw Duncan. I swam in the pool.
Max: I went to IHOP for breakfast. I went to Miss Webb's house. It was fun.
Nik: We went to Costco and they had lots of samples. And then I went swimming in the pool.
Julian: In band today we went to the first grade class and helped the first graders with their math.
Claire: I went to Nik's IEP meeting today. He is doing well. Next year he will need to focus on social cues, organization, and handwriting.
Mark: The day started well, with Claire.

Meggie: I went swimming in my shirt. I took my shirt off.
Max: I want pizza. I did not help make dinner.
Nik: I finished a Judy Blume book. It was Fudge-o-mania. I kind of liked it. Well, not really.
Julian: I was supposed to wear red today for the aerial photo at school But I didn't. But then the photographer's car broke down so he didn't do it today.
Claire: I am eating stilton for dinner. Yum.
Max: I want pizza. I did not help make dinner.

Meggie: I am eating pasta
Max: I played in the sandbox at school. When we are done outside we have a snack and read a book. I took my Winnie the Pooh book to school today for show and tell.
Nik: My friend told me there is a cave under a tree at school but I don't think there is.
Julian: I had my band concert at school today.
Claire: I got to have lunch with my friend Jon. And we went to Roti and I got to have hummus. Yum!
Mark: I do not like bad drivers who try to hit me.

Meggie: I am eating an apple (sense a theme here?)
Max: I went in the pool before dinner
Nik: I played in the pool with Julian
Julian: I had a field trip to Mt Vernon. This morning I also walked to school. I waited at the bus stop until 8:52. I decided with the other people at my bus stop that we would wait for 2 more minutes. When the bus didn't come, we walked to school. We got there at 9:08. School starts at 9:10 so we got there just in time.
Claire: I went for a big walk today as part of one of my meetings and walked around the White House.
Mark: I want punk kids to get off my lawn (or out of my pool)

Julian: People thought I was insane today as school because I kept singing the Small Potatoes "Potato Train" song all day.
Claire: We tried a new recipe today for dinner
Mark: The kids went in the sandbox today. Max and Meggie and Nik were in the sandbox because Max asked Nik to play in the sandbox.

How we started the News
On my last trip to England, I had a very loud and intersting cabbie on the way to Auntie's house from Heathrow. He told me that his family does "news" at night instead of asking the kids about their day. I decided to try it. And it WORKS! With OCD Max in the house, we always have to go in the same order. But everyone shares at least one "news story" about their day. Meggie's news tends to be "I am at your house" or "I am eating my dinner" but she's got the idea that she gets to say something. And all the kids are eager to share a story about their day.
